ToDoList (AbstractSpoon) Support

Thank you for providing this wonderful software! I installed it 12 years ago and I basically use it to organize my entire life. 🙂

I'm currently running version 8.0.19.1. I often do this: Create a new task and, for the task title, type in a few words and paste some additional text from the clipboard, like a URL.

A while ago, I started using ClipClip as clipboard manager. I'm quite happy with it apart from one thing: It doesn't play well with ToDoList.
When I press the keyboard shortcut I chose for it (Shift + Ins) while editing a task title, ClipClip pops up on top of ToDoList and I can select one of the recent clipboard entries. However, at the same time ToDoList loses focus, the task title is not in edit mode anymore, and I cannot paste the selected text from the clipboard manager.

I looked at the configuration options and googled quite a bit but couldn't find a solution. Maybe I'm missing something obvious; so I thought I'd ask here: Is there any way to keep the task title editable in the scenario I described?

Short answer: Unfortunately not, because loss of focus is the standard Windows way to handle in-place editing. I imagine the same issue arises when renaming a file in Windows Explorer...

Long Answer: Only by creating an appropriate user-defined tool (UDT) to replace the default 'New Task' command: ps. Unfortunately (again) you can't literally replace the 'New Task' command with your UDT but you can at least remap the keyboard shortcuts

Or try the Clipboard History option of Windows 10 instead of ClipClip, this one doesn't catch the focus in your scenario.

I enabled the Windows clipboard history and that works just fine. Brilliant! Since the Windows clipboard history and ClipClip seem to be coexsting peacefully, I think I'll pick that over the user-defined tool, which is a tiny bit more unwieldy. I'm quite happy; this week is off to a good start. Thanks again!

If anyone stumbles upon this thread, I just wanted to give an update:
By chance, I discovered that ClipClip can be quite chatty. Over a certain period, it established more Internet connections than any other application on my system.

So I went looking for another clipboard manager and found Ditto. After using it for a few days, I’m really pleased with its features, such as LAN synchronization, clip groups, clip text comparision, the ability to paste multiple selected entries, an unobtrusive always-on-top option, and a decent clip search.

The part most relevant to this thread is that Ditto doesn’t steal focus from ToDoList in a way that prevents pasting text into task titles. If anyone else needs this regularly and isn’t satisfied with the built-in Windows multi-clipboard, Ditto might be worth a try. I can vouch for it.

The most powerful clipboard manager I've ever encountered has been out of development for at least a decade.

It's called Clipmate.

This is an unbelievable powerful program that I've been using for I guess 20 years or more and I've never found anything that could replace it.

I haven't tried doing what you were originally trying to do with it because I just read this thread and I'm not at my computer right now. But if anything can handle that it would be this program. It has an unbelievable number of features.

I don't know what language it's written in or what database it uses, the only complaint might be that it is a bit antiquated. But I've used it on both Windows 10 and 11 with no problems at all.

It's incredibly powerful. Thought you might want to check it out. Not even sure if you can still get it but the website is still there.

I use the built-in Windows 10 clipboard for temporary day-to-day stuff, but when I need to bring in the heavy artillery Clipmate does it all. It's the TDL of the clipboard.

Ryan, thanks for suggesting ClipMate! I was probably aware of it years ago but didn’t want to pay for a clipboard manager back then. It’s great that the author is giving it away for free now.

I’m curious to see if it works for my use case. Maybe you can test it when you’re back at your computer. I don’t want to install it just for that, and I’m having trouble figuring out how to run it sandboxed. Plus, I’m in the middle of something else and don’t want to spend too much time on it right now.
