I've set the sorting to Reminder. This would mean that all records without a reminder would appear first in the sorting. But that's not the case. Do I need to configure anything else?

Sorting in the 'Task Tree' only sorts subtasks within their immediate parent task.
If you want tasks sorted as a flat list then switching to 'List View' will allow this.
