Crash when ToDoList is stored on NAS Topic is solved

Dear all,

I run the latest version of TDL to date (7.2.23.0 or 8.0 alpha) on the latest version of Windows 10 family edition (version 1909) and TDL quits unexpetedly after staying unused in the notification tray for some time.

I tried to run it with Windows' compatibility mode with Windows 8 : no change.

The steps are the following :
- Download TDL and unzip it on a NAS (Network Area Storage) (Note: I suspect it is the cause !)
- Launch TDL with Windows 10
- Open a tasklist (one of mines, didn't try Introduction.tdl yet for instance) on the NAS or W10 computer
- Don't use TDL and wait until it crashes (preferences file is not written), which always happens after some time (in particular after recovering from W10 standby ?)

By the way it seems the crash only happens when TDL is stored on the NAS (my intention is to store everything on my NAS, that's the purpose of a NAS...), whatever the location of the tasklist.

Yes, I know but that doesn't really help me if I can precisely replicate your setup that's why I need to ask questions even if you don't understand their significance.

Do you also store ToDoList.exe on the NAS?

1. Can you enable 'Multi-Instance' (Tools > Preferences > General > Allow multiple instances of ToDoList) then close and restart TDL
2. Can you start a second instance and just load 'Introduction.tdl' which you have first copied to the NAS
3. See if it crashes too

I was with crash, probably caused by a portable installation in two locations, one on a memory stick and one on the hard drive. I test "Multiinstance" and now zero problems. Thanks!

This is a different bug as I have a single location portable installation and multi-instance leads to two crashes, one after the other.

Yes, "TDL is stored on the NAS" meant that the full ToDoList folder (executable file, preferences file, sample tasklists and so on) is on the NAS.

When srtarting two instances of TDL, one loaded with Introduction.tdl and the other one with another taskfile, both instances crash in the end, one after the other.

I tried to disable Windows 10's standby mode, it still crashed. I then disabled long standby aka hibernate mode in addition, and it kept crashing also.

Also, how is the NAS configured for power-saving?

The NAS itself never shutdowns nor uses a standby mode, but the NAS' hard disk hibernates after a certain time of inactivity. I disabled this hibernatiion but TDL still crashed.

My conclusion is that TDL crashes after some time whenever it is stored on my NAS, regardless of the tasklist(s) opened or the various standby modes.

Since we can't get proper crash reports (which is very strange) another thing we can try is to log all file activity using ProcMon.

1. Download and unzip the attached ToDoList.pmc configuration file
2. Start ProcMon
3. 'File > Import Configuration > ToDoList.pmc'
4. Make sure 'Capture' is enabled (The status bar will display multiplying excluded events)
5. Start 'ToDoList.exe'
6. Events should now start to appear in the main window
7. Leave it running until TDL crashes
8. 'File > Save > Events displayed using the current filter'
9. Zip-up and attach the PML file

OK I'll try but with the default configuration as I can't import any configuration file in ProcMon (no .PMC or .pmc file is ever listed in the import dialog box even if the file is present in the directory), it seems there is a bug 8-|

The 'missing' pmc file could be because Windows is trying to protect you!

Before unzipping the file, right-click it in Explorer, selected 'Properties', tick the 'Unblock' checkbox bottom-right, and then OK.

Then unzip the file and try again...
